My cottage has its new roof. 7 weeks of work

Would like to say it was DIY but have to be honest.

I did DIY the relocation of the TV aerial

While resisting the temptation to look down

The roof looks good.
One has just been redone in the next village to ours by a man on his own. First time I've seen that. He must have slept well at night.

How long might you expect the thatch to last
At least 25 years and probably 40 or more.

And then it is normally only the top layer that has to be removed and replaced. Some roofs that have been looked after have 100 year old thatch at their base..

There was a problem with this roof in that several of the rafters were being held in place by the thatch rather ethan supporting the thatch and additional rafters had to be fittid between them. ( Grade II listed so all "historic fabric" including ancient straw and crumbling timber has to be preserved ). This was an area where the rafters were being held in place by the thatch and the roof bent inwards under weight of the thatchers.
