This is incorrect.

It should be: "Wood likes water as long as it's a tree, after that..."

Still better than my Dutch though...

Technically still wrong, notb!

That phrase, as written, implies that the water itself should be a tree, which is nonsensical! It's the same type of sentence as "I like cars as long as they're fast" or "I like lager as long as it's cold".

The correct version would be:

"As long as wood is a tree, it likes water. After that..."
