Hi, I have a 1.8 16valve zetec engine in my escort which has intermittent starting problems. The breakdown guy said it is the crankshaft sensor which needs a clean or replacement. I have looked in the haynes manual etc but have had no joy locating it. Please could anyone let me know where it is and how to get to it. I've had an extended look and i believe it is on the frontside of the flywheel housing behind water hoses. If this is the case how do i remove these to get at the sensor. This is really annoying me now as its a lottery to whether the darn thing starts or leaves me stuck in a car park all day. Thanks in advance. Andy

I think you first have to remove the starter motor to gain access.Looking down from the front of the car where the gearbox joins the engine, the sensor is to the left on the engine side, held in with a torx head bolt(I think).Look for the wires going to it.

;)

Hi, i have had the starter motor off but there's nothing behind it. On my engine the starter motor is on the rear of the engine block. Any other suggestions? THanks. Andy

Look or feel above the starter, around the engine side of the bellhousing, the sensor should be held in with a 10mm or torx bolt.It is awkward so remove the starter again and have another look/feel from below.

hi jonny,

thanks for all your help, i've looked at the haynes manual i've been using and the 1.6 zetec engine has its starter motor on the frontside of the flywheel whereas my 1.8 has it on the rear. This could be why the haynes manual says remove the starter motor first, but in my case it may be wrong. Unless you know any thing else about this then i'll just have another ponder under the car later on. Thanks. Andy

Yes Andy, I know what you are saying but look/feel at the rear of the engine as previous post.

look/feel for the wires going to the sensor.

hi, just thought you might know about another problem i'm having.

There is a clicking/creaking noise coming from the front (possibly offside) when accelerating, depressing the clutch pedal or releasing the accelerator suddenly whilst in gear. It is also present in reverse. It is becoming another annoyance. Looking on other threads there seems to be a magnitude of things to change, none of which have helped. At times it can be more like a ratchet noise (i.e. a series of clicks/clunks). I want to avoid the trial and error route so was wondering if you have any suggestions?

Thanks

Andy

CV joint on one of the driveshafts?
Is it worse with the steering on full lock?

hiya, it could be the CV joint but it still makes the noise when driving over pot holes or speed bumps in neutral. This points to suspension but i will have a look at the CV joint later. How else can i isolate it from other problems. Full lock forward and backwards??? Thanks for your help. Andy

Usually notice it when driving on full lock.
Ive got the same sort of knock on a ford ka i'm trying to diagnose!
Fords........... stay away from the bloody things
