my drivers side lock on my "N" reg ford escort van is giving up the ghost..
for a while it has been finicky and you had to sort of wiggle the key to unlock it, but now it's getting more and more awkward to find the sweet spot..
the back doors, ignition and passenger side are all ok, so I guess it's just wear and tear..

any ideas where I can get a new cylinder from?
would I need a new key to go with it or can they cut the cylinder to suit ( it's one of those hexagonal type keys )

you might be able to get fords or a decent locksmith to rebuild your lock?
there also might be some one on ebay that sells repair kits, have seen something along those lines but wether its exactley what your looking for?
as your car is a few years old it might be more cost effective to obtain a complete lock set from a scrappy or ebay for your car, iirc the only thing that might be a bit tricky is the ingnition lock?

what he said....

Get a barrel & key from a scrap yard & use that with a seperate key for the ignition.
Or go to your local dealrs & ask how much a new barrel is,I got quoted £20 when I asked.

Oh, try some lubrication first, I oiled mine & it came back to life for a while.

the repair kit is about £26 according to some websites I googled after the first response..
I didn't realise that you could get build it yourself replacement barrels....

as yours is an older model before you buy the repair kit check out a few scrappys to see how much for a complete lock set will cost.

I'd go with the repair kit, ford locks and keys from this era were very prone to wear, so a lock set from a scrappy might not be much better.
Also check the key as well, even though it opens the other locks it could be worn, and a combination of wear in lock and key may cause the fault

Is it possible to swap the lock barrels between the doors, so you end up with a less worn lock on the driver's door?

The locks on the old escort I had a while back were so worn you could open it with any key.

Buy a kit from Fords and rebuild the new lock with the same number as your old worn one. ie The lock is made up of numbered tumblers and spacer shims, take out your old lock and remove the barrel, remove the shims and numbered tumblers and lay them in order as they come out (noting the two different shims at each end). Match up the new shims and tumblers to the old ones and rebuild the new lock. You will then have the number of the key for all your locks and can get a new one cut anytime you want. It may look complicated when you get the bag of bits but it isn't if you take your time, do it in order and write down the number. A kit is about £20 I think.

;)

You could try getting a new key cut to code. I had a similar problem on a J reg fiesta but it was with the ignition barrel. Turned out it was the old worn key that was causing the problem.
