Over the last 2 days my ford escort has been over revving between 2000 -3000 rpm, if i slam my foot on the accelerator pedal the revs drop back to normal.

What is going on???

The car is a ford escort 1.8 si on a R plate

Stupid replies this car does not have a carb, its injection.Your problem lies with what is called an idle air control valve. If you can try cleaning it with a quality spray cleaner if this not fix the problem you will have to renew it.

Lapdog, please do not call people stupid when they are trying their upmost to assist others ;) I'm sure Libby Lou Lou ment to say "Thottle Body" and not "carb" You may or may not be right about the IAC but if he renews it like you said and the prob still remains he's not going to thank you for it. I suggested the cable because its the cheapest route to start with. :D

I am a novice at car repairs, it is easy to get the the idle air control valve?? Also yesterday I did put some fuel injector cleaner in my tank but it has not done much.

thanks for everyones help by the way :D

The best thing you can do is to obtain the "Haynes Workshop Manual" for your car. Members of this forum will then be able to advise you better when you know where to look. Try e-bay for the manual or any motorist accessory shop.

;)

I have a similar problem with my 1.6. Took it to Ford they told me it was the IAC, they changed but it did not fix the problem. Went back and they changed the fuel metering valve. Still didn't fix it!!! Now they reckon that the whole ECU needs replaced, think I will learn to live with it. It only realy happens for a few minutes after starting up the engine.

just a thought / have you dissconected battery lately ?. as the haynes manual says if so,the ecu will need to learn its idling and operating values again.... .that will also cause problem you got, as it did to my 94 escort. hope this helps. r.r.

I have done the same things as you and the garage has told me that the ECU has gone.

My car does it all the time now it just revs at 2000 - 3000 rpm now and after about 10 seconds it goes back to normal but soon a you press the gas pedal and then take you foot off it, it just revs

i'm getting totally p***ed off with it now

NO, DEFINATELY NOT, you will have get all numbers exactly right, unless things have changed again, if you must go down this route, take the car in, swop the ecu over before parting with any cash, don't pay more than £50
