Ford focus spare key problem.

I have a 3 year old focus and have never had to use the spare key until today, when I thought I would give it to the mechanic who is carrying out the 36000 mile service and first MOT.

When I used it to open the door, there was a bleeping inside the car and when I turned the ignition on, the alarm started sounding.

I believe that there is an embedded chip in the spare key, that is sensed inside the car. Is it likely to be something that has deteriorated in the 3 years or has never worked? Anyone else come across this?

I intend contacting the dealer where it was bought tomorrow. Don't know how responsive he will be due to the time elapsed.

key will probabley need programing any decent auto electrician will be able to do it

It might have gone out of sync due to non use, there could be a simple re sync procedure which if I remember I will look up tomorrow, failing that it will need a recode at the dealers.
