ford transit 04 mwb med roof

the fan behind the radiator has come loose, so the spindle spins but the fan is loose and rattles.

easy fix or job for the garage - any blown up diagrams?

not knowing how much you know about engines, but are you just looking at the viscous coupling doing its thing? It should spin relatively freely with a small amount of resistance. If you went out to it first thing/ when cold you would feel a greater amount of resistance for the first dozen or so turns. Does it overheat at all in traffic?
