Hi folks,

I'm about to lay some borders consisting of a single row of granite setts, around the edge of some garden paths and a driveway. Most of the paths will then have gravel on the inside and grass on the other side.

Normally I would just make this up as I went along, but I've got about 80 meters worth to do, and I don't want to get it wrong therefore!

What should I be looking at in terms of a footing for laying them on? The setts are only around 50mm high and 100x100.

My feeling was to dig a footing approx 4 inches deep, 6 inches wide, and occasionally (about once a meter) to insert a 'pile' going to around 1 foot deep. Fill with concrete then lay the setts on a wide bed of mortar, filleted around their base. I wasn't going to bother laying hardcore in the footing, was just going to ram it down a bit with a wooden pole.

Does this sound reasonable? Or over the top? Or do I definitely need hardcore in the bottom somehow?

Would appreciate any advice.

Cheers,
Rich

Tthe ones on the drive should be laid on 6'' of concrete, no need for a seperate mortar course, just bed them direct on semi dry concrete. Then haunch them with a strong wet concrete or mortar.

The ones on the paths i would just lay on 4'' of concrete and finish as above.

Oh and no need for your pile.

They are better laid direct on the sub-grade than hardcore which could settle
