To allow two phones to speak to each other you just have to put voltage (48V is the norm for phones but you will probablly get away with lower) on the line through some inductance.

The tricky bit is making the phones ring.

Get yourself a pair of cordless phones, put 1 next door tell your daughter only use it to page you & vise versa.
So simple

The tricky bit is making the phones ring.

It can be done DIY with three telephone type relays and a source of AC ringing voltage. I made a few fro friends in my youth.

Some modern phones will "ring" when DC is applied between pins 3 and 5 so an AC ringing generator is not needed. ( In normal use the DC is blocked by the capacitor in the master socket between wires 2 and 3 )

There is a company that sells a unit that does just this but I cannot recall the name as I write.

(EDIT) Found the item I was thinking about, does the job but also a lot more and in 2005 cost £160 so not really the thing you need

This was the one I was trying to remember ( memory jogged by a friend )

Uses almost any telephone but more expensive than the intercom that Dave.m suggests and you have to supply ( buy ) the phones as well.

For houses next door to each other Dave's suggestion is good.

I can remember doing the same myself Libby.

Unfortunately some of the Islands phone boxes didn't work afterwards

Wouldn't a pair of walkie talkies from Tesco's etc do the same now?
