Freezer gel packs - how do you dispose of yours?

While I can perfectly understand the use of frozen gel packs with delivered frozen goods, disposal of them is not necessarily easy.

I have a septic tank which means that I can't just flush the contents of the packs down the drain and then put the plastic out with my recycling, so how do I deal with the gel inside the packs?

Along with everything else that isn’t obviously recyclable they go in to general waste or down the tip

That's a good question, I guess because of the gel there's is a danger of blocking up the soakaway?

If I was to put my current 'collection' of gel packs into my large chest freezer I would have more gel packs than food ........

My local tip is about a 40 minute drive from me. Putting the gel into the general waste is an option but there's a lot of them and due to the liquid these things are heavy when in any kind of quantity, the contents will also add a lot of bulk and there is a limit on how many black bags I can put out (three maximum once every three weeks).

This isn't 'shopping' in the normal sense, it's frozen dog food (and I doubt if DHL will take back the boxes and gel packs. I can ask of course). Because of this I end up with about 36 gel packs every month .......... it's quite a recent thing though, the dog food supplier used to use their own chilled vans but due to a change in policy they now also use couriers (and so create a lot of cardboard, plastic and gel waste ......... ).

Keep 'em then (you don't have to keep them in the freezer, btw )

You're gonna need them when it gets hot hot hot this summer (but you WILL have to have frozen them, for this bit)

Maybe consider a change of diet for the dog ?

Get a big sack of working dog food, vat free.

Legally you have to take the dog to work with you afterwards
