Freezer

I am in the USA. What causes a freezer to run intermittently for a while then work for 24 hours and then quit again? The compressor quits running.

I want to learn as much about refrigeration as possible. Cannot afford a school.

it shouldn't keep running for 24 hours. It should run intermittently, say 20 minutes on, 40 minutes off, like that, times depending on how efficient the compressor is, how well-charged the refrigerant is, and whether the door has been opened at all. Why do you ask?

The only time it should break cycle is if it has a defrost mode and enters this. But this should cause it to turn off for a while, again, time depending on the type of fridge, and the condition of the cooling fins.

The reason I ask is because I am trying to fix it myself and I want to make sure that I find what part is causing this. Any help in diagnosing this will be appreciated.

sounds like your freezer thermostat, whats happening inside? is it still freezing ok? is there a super freeze switch thats been accidently put on?
