we (U.K.) as a nation matured very quickly, very early, this was in the Victorian era. our approach to building railways, roads, canals, bridges etc was bourne out of an urgent necessity, and a little bit of forward planning was somewhat forgotten.

as a result, some of the layout of railways and roads were a little bit haphazard, and made worse by being built by different companies with their own agendas. this lead to a meandering railway that cannot cope with high speed rail. unfortunately modernization of the railways has been painfully slow, and it's only now we're doing something about it.

bridges were the only exception, although a lot of lesser rural bridges were far too narrow.

this is what i think anyhow.

the japanese one was probably experimental maglev [magnetic levitation]
so not traditional steel wheels on steel rails

http://aolsearch.aol.co.uk/web.adp?query=japanese maglev record&invocationType=sb_uk[/QUOTE]not sure on that to be honest but there were loads of passengers onboard with a digital display next to the door showing 600+ i'll try and search for it but i've feeling it was in the old chat forum and the general discussion pages only go back 111 odd pages

No can't find it, Pip do you remember the thread? i've tried japan, japanese, speed, train but can't find it, do you remember the video with the white digital speedometer? it showed the landscape whizzing by the windows I think the post had a link to this video somewhere would be interested whether it was Maglev or not.

The Japanese 600 + was mag lev and not wheels on track.

One advantage the French have is their government not only permits the building of straight tracks with little regard for any property along the chosen route but it also encourages it.
