Hi tilers,

is it ok to tile straight onto new fresh plaster or should it be coated with a PVA mix first? if so how many coats??

Also how long should you give plaster to set before tiling...as soon as it looks dry or can you get away with tiling onto still damp patches?

Thanks in advance guys...if any of you live in Brum and are lookin for work...email me your contact details

NEVER use conventional PVA as a primer under tiles, especially in wet areas or your tiles may end up on the floor. If priming is necessary, use an acrylic based primer but always follow your chosen adhesive manufacturer’s instructions. If using large/heavy format tiles, use a cement powder adhesive &, in this case, bare plaster must be primed with acrylic primer to avoid a reaction between the Gypsum plaster & cement in the adhesive.

If it’s just a plaster skim, you can tile after 10-14 days but a full base coat & finish skim should be left around 4 weeks to dry out fully; even if it looks dry, there will be some residual moisture content which must be allowed to escape before tiling or painting.
