I was looking after my friend's house last week and opened the fridge to put in some veg that I had picked. It was totally dead - no lights or anything. I unplugged it and used another socket - same issue. I came home to Google for an hour or two and read that this can be a safety feature. One recommendation was to remove anything from the top of the appliance. So I went back and it had burst back to life. I did notice that they had a pile of pans stored on top so I removed those and since then there's been no problem. (I did check the plug and that seemed to be wired OK.) Any other suggestions?
