What is the technical reason that prevents refrigerators working in an outhouse? Do they need a minimum ambient temp?

I want to buy a fridge/freezer to put in the garage, but on the Comet website it says that some aren't suitable for this.

Is this the manufacturers being over-cautious?

The ones which are inadvisable to use in the garage will only have one compressor. On single compressor appliances the thermostat is in the fridge part. So if it’s about 5 degrees C in garage the fridge will be ok so compressor won’t run. Freezer will rise above its ideal temp and will eventually defrost.

Some fridge freezers have two compressors and two thermostats - one for each compartment. These should be ok for use in the garage.

Spot on sine m8. I had same symptons as you describe with a single compressor f/f. The freeser section kept defrosting.
