Furniture back panel

I want to build a custom shelf/cabinet and I am researching all the necessary materials&tools. I failed to find however the flimsy thin panel that manufacturers (like IKEA or standard kitchens) put on the back of the furniture. What is it called and where can I find it? Can I paint over it or does it come ready painted/laminated?

Use 6mm mdf or ply, you want it stronger than the cr*p Ikea use.

Just Google for hardboard. They sell the 3mm at Wickes, B&Q etc.

Hardboard comes with one side that is paintable some places sell white faced hardboard.

What finish were you looking for? Also was it to back the inside of a cabinet or an exposed area?

If hidden away and no more structure is needed then hardboard would be fine but it is and looks flimsy.

If it will be visible then maybe mdf would work as it holds its shape better.

Ply is very strong but depending on your finish might not be the best material to use.

it is exposed, back of a shelf. Can I paint over MDF? If so, do I need a primer?

You can paint mdf , mdf primer or emulsion makes a cheap alternative.Roller give a good flat finish.

You will need an MDF primer as it soaks up paint like a sponge.

Wickes do a MDF Board 9x606x1220mm.

i always go for 6mmply/mdf and a 7x7mm rebate glue and pin/nail
then you can hang what you like off the back

wouldnt use hardboard as its too thin
