Hi there, i have recently moved into a new house and have noticed a problem with the lights. Sometimes the lights will blow after a period of time for no reason and occasionally the lights will blow the fuse box even if all lights are switched off. I would be v.grateful for any advice

Thanks that is going to be my next step, i would be interested to know what the likely explanation for this occurences is - i have only been experiencing the problems over the last week or so, the lights were fine before

Could be anything, water in an outside light, dodgy chock block connection above an enclosed light fitting overheating, rodents eating through electric wires (You did ask  ).
Your friendly spark will have test equipment which should allow him to locate the fault.

Cheers - i will call out an electrician (and possibly a rodent catcher!)

The only electrical work i undertake is v.basic primarily changing light switches / bulb holders etc, any wiring is well beyond me. The only thing i can think off is i have been insulating the attic - there are a lot of wires and a transformer up there so maybe something is overheating

Hopefully not - otherwise will have to consider opening an account with an electrician!

Well, if the problems started after your work, it must be ruled out.
