Hi,

I am planning to rent out my flat however, I have an old consumer unit which seems to have both rewireable fuses and cartridge fuses

The wiring seems to be run in pvc sheath cable.

I wanted to upgrade my consumer unit to the 17th Ed Consumer unit.

I have had a quote of £300 including parts + labour. He said that there should be no rewire required.

I wanted to get a second opinion on weather its possible to upgrade your consumer unit without a rewire? Reason being I have just redecorated and am worried I might need some rewiring done.

Thanks in advance :)

£300 seems to be the going rate but unless you have had a PIR done its impossible to know what faults they are, and such faults may only show up once the spark does all the testing after fitting the CU.

If the cable is PVC and in good condition then there is no need for a rewire if all the sockets etc are in the right places.

Why the "however"?

"Seems to be"?

Yes, it is possible.

But nobody can know if in any particular case it can be done without doing some checks and tests first.

Very important rule when having a CU replaced:

Never, ever, go with somone who doesn't propose to do tests first, and before committing to a price.

I think you should rearrange these words into a well known phrase or saying:

the

putting

horse

cart

the
