Gable truss ladder?

Hi just wondered what the purpose of a gable truss ladder is and do I have to have one on an apex extension?

Gives weather protection to the walls below.

The ladder is purely to hold up the timber barge boards on the verge

If you don't have any timber up the verge you don't need a ladder

Are the existing gables cut brick or barge and soffit?

the existing are barge and soffit but i wanted to finish the new extension with just a bargeboard without the soffits

It always looks a bit cheap if the bargeboard doesn't project out so as to have a soffit.
