Hi guys I am getting my living room plaster boarded and have take old plaster back to the brick. When Ive taken it from about the window there was a thick layer of plaster lay on the lintel. Should I replace it with something or is it ok to leave a hollow space behind plaster board.

Thanks

Al

If the wooden lintol is not rotten (test it by poking a screw driver in it) then I would paint some wood preservative on it and let it soak in, (Put a few coats on it). Then when its dried in bring it out to the brick work with plaster board, then leave the plasterer to sort it out..

whats goin on? i've been reading these forums for a while an this op had a pic of a dody lintel over a bay. today i open the post an the pics have gone. now they are back!

op you dont show pics of the outside or the roof (if its a single story bay). moisture is getting in an at the wood lintels and some kind of rot is present. you can see black tendrils in pic 2. just spraying preserveative wont work further investigation is needed especially if thats dry rot tendrils.
we do this kind of work all the time an most times the wood lintols (an bressummer beams sometimes too)have to be replaced with steel.
sometimes when the old box double hung frames have been replaced with Pvc the installers leave rotten plugs of wood in the brickwork.
you should hack off all plaster from the lintols up to the ceilingan send pics
