Just noticed today that there are some gaps where the chimney hood meets the wall and ceiling and when its on I can feel the air coming out of these gaps.

Should I seal them up? Would it be more effective?

If it vents outside then there’s an ‘internal’ length of ducting that you can’t see going from the fan to the grill on the wall( or whatever) outside. If both ends of that are fitted correctly, you can relax - no smelly air being pumped into the kitchen.

If you get air out of the chimney when fan is running, it suggests the duct isn’t intact or insecure .

You were right. Finally got round to taking the chimney off and found a 125mm duct pipe gaffer taped to a 150mm outlet from the hood so got myself a 150>125mm reducer
