We are renovating our staircase. There is a gap down the side that meets the wall. I suspect that the wall ain't straight as it meets the wood at the top and bottom. There was a piece of quadrant covering the gap but I'd prefer it to be closed some how or filled. Any comments on how this is normally dealt with?

Consider stuffing some card into the gap and then covering it over with a layer of decorators caulk....bear in mind this stuff doesn't like to be sanded afterwards but it is dead easy to smooth when its fresh.

Trade deco centres and some better on-line suppliers can actually supply different diameter foam "laces" (called caulk saver) for just this purpose. A better solution than newspaper IMHO and saves on caulk, too

In my experience even though caulk is flexible, it will crack with the flex in the stairs. I sorted mine with trim rather than quadrant. Now that I've painted it, it looks part of the stringer. It's been a couple of months and have had no problems. Hope that helps.

I used 4mm thickness as it had to flex round a curve. I joined two pieces and used the narrower width at the top where the gap was less.
