I have a fireplace which has a gap to the side at floor level where the skirting and floor meets the bricks.

How should this be corrected or filled?

It is likely a pipe entry / exit point for what could have been a back boiler years ago and is simple enough to fill with either a small piece of brickwork pointed in or just with mortar.
