Hi all,

The (probable) asbestos cement sheets on my garage desperately need replacing as they are cracking badly. Am in a bit of a dilemma about what to do. There are several nationwide specialist garage repair firms which all want approx. £2k to remove and replace with plastic coated metal sheets. I need to do it cheaper than that.

Am tempted to try and DIY with coralline but the metal roof frame has purlins too widely spaced so would probably need some additional ones put it. How easy would this be?

I guess the other option is to get some kind of non-specialist handyman or such to do this, presumably for much less than the £2k especially if I do the asbestos disposal, which can be done for free at my local tip.

Any tips much appreciated!

Thanks

You can get replacement sheeting asbestos free or simply use corrugated iron that can be colour coated, both should fit the existing roof support and be a simple diy job.

I think I would avoid the asbestos look alike stuff myself though to save any confusion in the future when you sell.

Just pay a registered contractor to remove and clean up the old roof.

Pick one from here.

Thanks all. I was initially thinking those coraline sheets, but they are quite flimsy I think hence the roof frame would need some work. Steel sheets could be good. I will contact some local roofers and see what they say.

The coralline type is not very secure

It should be relatively easy to remove the original intact but wear a mask and avoid breaking it

When I disposed of my old gutters and down pipes I needed proof of residence to dump the asbestos and make an appointment . I had to double wrap it in hd polythene . I made the mistake of mentioning that one was from my neighbour. And they said that I had to bring him as well. (He's90)

I just left it a week and rang again and didn't mention the neighbour
