Help! Our neighbour's garage wall forms part of the boundary in our back garden. It is getting a bit tatty in places so we want to paint it using the same colour as it was originally. Do we need to ask his permission to do this even though it would be doing him a favour?

thats a legal question which no one on here can legaly answer.

that said courtesey says ask him first and just in case ask him to sign a letter to the fact he doesnt mind

or put a fence up infront of it and paint that

Thanks guys but in that case will probably just leave it rather than do anything which may backfire at a later date then if it rots it's his problem not ours.

How hard can it be to pop round and offer to paint his wall for him? Are you not on the friendliest of terms then?

In any case, if it's ugly on your side, put up some reed screen to hide it.

if yopu cant paint it put up some trellis on posts just in front of the wall and grow climbers up it

I had this problem a few years ago, I was also worried that the garage, was so insecure it might fall down, particularly if one of us accidentally stumbled into it.
I put up a trellis fence on my side of the boundary, and grew climbers up it, this worked fine. The only problem is that climbers once established grow rapidly, and cause a lot of work trimming etc. So the recently, I have killed them all off, and planted a couple of climbing roses, which I regularly prune to keep them within bounds.
