Garage wall thickness

Hi,

I'm hoping someone might know the answer to this question....

I am looking to build a garage which will be adjoining on to the side of my House. The Front and Rear walls (Load Bearing for the Roof) will be 200mm thick whereas the side wall is spec'd at 100mm with 440 x 215mm piers at 2m spacings.

I'd rather not have piers (or Pillars) inside the garage so was wondering what would be the minimum thickness of the wall should be without using pillars, or what size block would I need?

The wall itself will be 6.2m Long by a maximum of 4.7m high (note: this is the highest point of the Apex for the roof).

suggest you get a drawing done, and then work to the drawing specifications.
if you already have an approved drawing then you must consult with whoever did the drawing, and maybe BCO before making changes?
 
Currently doing mine 215mm (1 brick thick) throughout. Building control are not particularly interested as it’s a garage, but they’re obviously fine with it.
Or you could go cavity.

Work to brick or block units, so if you don't want 102.5 or 100 walls with a pier, then it's 215 or 210 thick walls. The gable could potentially be reduced back to single skin.

Silly question maybe but could piers be avoided if 140mm blocks are used?

If going for blocks laid flat construction, Id consider the extra cost of going 250mm wall and having a cavity.

Especially if the garage is to be used fir storage, workshop or anything that needs to be dry.
 
I would agree with bobasd's comments above. Attached garage requires building regs approval. If you have the space why not build it in cavity wall construction, brick outer, block inner leaf.

I was hoping that 140mm block would be sufficient to avoid having piers, but wasn't sure of the regs. It will be going to planning and building control, but am just planning in in my head at the moment to get an idea of what can or can't do.

The 'garage' will primarily be used as a workshop rather than for storing a car (or junk) in. This is the reason why I was hoping to avoid the Piers so that I can have work benches along the wall without obstructions. However, the width of the workshop is important too. So a bit of a compromise required. A cavity wall would certainly be the best standard, but the added cost is probably too much.....I'm hoping to build it for 10k (don't laugh!!)

Materials would be about that, Id guess a builder would charge £25k all in.

You might be able to do it is you subbed out brickwork and did rest yourself.
 
I'm looking to do it myself. I've built a few walls before and laboured for builders who done an extension for me. It will take me a lot longer, but see it as a project so not to worried about that. I will be getting someone to do the rendering (Wet Dash) though.
 
Is it a single garage? Mines at £1400 to wall plate height. Expect to finish it well below 3k. Mines only 5m long tho so a tad smaller than yours.

edit: forgot the garage door. So maybe another grand for that depending how posh.
 
Thats good going! How much did it cost you to do the founds & Concrete slab? I wouldn't have thought I'd get above the DPC for under £1400. I wouldn't expect the Roof trusses and Tiles to be cheap either.

The Garage will be 4.6m wide, so more like a 1 1/2 rather than a double.
 
Oops, foundations were already in as I did them last year. Concrete wise about £300. Another 300 for slab+hardcore.
I doubt I’ll use trusses but if I did they’d be probably 500 ish. A load of 6x2s will be a lot less.
I reckon I can get the tiles, membrane, battens, soffits, fascias, guttering in for 900, happy to correct myself at a later date though.
