Hello,

Pretty newbie to anything DIY so thought I will check you with you guys expert.

Got these chairs second hand and would like to paint them with some colour like these below.

http://www.diy.com/departments/colours-garden-colour-fir-wood-stain-750ml/182162_BQ.prd

I was wondering what should be the best steps by steps process for that ?
the chair are currently indoor so to stay dry and avoid any damp or humidity.

Should I sand them before?
Should I put some wood protection before to paint these with the B&Q house paint?
Keeping the cost low, so using B&Q house product rather than Cuprinol.

Any others thoughts and tips would be welcome.

Thanks,
Jeremy

You're not so clear as to what you are asking.

You've given a link to some wood stain, designed for exterior wood, then mention using house paint. What do you mean? Beware of false economy please.

I would recommend using materials that are recommended for each job. If you use paint that is designed for each job, they will do the job properly and be long lasting.

Yes, lightly sand if you like, but remove any dirt, Algae, lichen etc. Make sure is dry, free from any flakes and should be good to go. If you use paint that is designed for the job, then no, you do not need to put a wood preserver on it.

Many thanks for your reply.
Apologies for not being clear.

What I meant by house paint was to use the brand from the shop for instance versus the branded product like cuprinol or ronseal.

Do you think there is a difference between each? I guess I will need to check the label to see if any.

Versus a cheaper option such: http://www.diy.com/departments/colours-garden-colour-fir-wood-stain-750ml/182162_BQ.prd

In order to protect the wood, do you think i need to put some wood preserver before to paint the chair with the color?

Thanks for the advise re the preparation. Greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeremy

Cheers for housepaint thing..

As mentioned, never used the B&Q stuff, so I can't comment other than I do not trust B&Q own stuff so I wouldn't try.
I have used the cuprinol stuff and was very impressed tho, especially liked how the lighter colour I chose completely covered darker wood perfectly.

And no, please do not treat it. The country colour/B&Q stuff IS the wood treatment. Treating it is a waste of time and money, and in the case of the country colour, they recommend removing all previous treatments before using. However, I didn't do that and it still worked great.
