i have an old gas boiler fitted in a chimney and the flue goes strait up the chimney.had a quote for new one but the plumber told me if i put a combie boiler there and the flue up the chimney it would cost more to run the boiler as it would have to heat the chimney to work propley is this true or have i been had in the bag to make it easy for him to install ?

i not an heating engineer , but y would the flu heat the chimney its just there to take fumes away ??

all boilers will have specific instructions as to how long, method and rules to their installation. your average combi will not be able to be flued right up your chimney and out through top of stack. ATAG boilers allow this and i`m sure there are others but i only know of them. my experiance is limited on this matter, others on this forum will be able to give you more advice
