I am just about to move into a property with a gas cooker, not realising I have bought a gas hob and electric oven :( How difficult and how expensive will it be to install the right socket.

Thanks

Look at the manual or the sales brochure for the electric oven and see what power it uses at max. This info will also be on a makers plate on the oven itself.

If it is a typical UK single oven it will probably be about 2200Watts or 2.2 kW or about 10Amps. In which case you can plug it in to a convenient socket using a 13Amp plug.

If it is a double oven, and/or takes more than 3kW, you will need a new radial circuit installed. If you go down this route you may as well have a big cable that can later be used for a big electric cooker in case you get a new wife who likes electric hobs (even though they are not as good as gas ones  )

But have a good look around the kitchen as many houses with far-sighted builders or owners have a circuit installed for an electric cooker, when they are wired, to provide flexibility for future use.

If you do need to have a new circuit installed, get quotes from qualified electricians who are members of an approved self-certification scheme and will issue you with a certificate when done.
