Gas fire fitters

Any specialist gas fire fitters advice please,
I am looking to purchase a fire for a new build, last week I was in a retail shop who have their own fitters, [quite a large setup] and in response to a question I asked, they said that they were able to fit fires to class 2 precast flues that I have , that were according to the brochures suitable for class1 and class 2 prefabricated, can anyone confirm this is possible from experience please.

Any gas fire can only be fitted to the flue/chimney that the manufacturers approve.

You're best to choose your fire then contact the manufacturers for proper advice before purchase.

You do not state what type of fire you are buying, I presume you are purchasing an inset type gas fire.
In my opinion I have found too many sales staff incorrectly quote class 1 or class 2 when referring to depth of fire that will be recessed into your chimney opening. Normally, in my experience, a deep fire will be class 1 and a narrow "slimline" fire will be class 2/1 (you can fit a class 2 into a class 1 but not visa versa) . However, as always, the manufacturers instructions must be followed.
You say "new build" so your chimney depth could be as deep as a traditional brick chimney but still not suitable for a class 1 fire.
Twenty years ago you would be lucky to have 100mm depth in a precast flue !
Most new builds nowadays have anything up to 300mm, suitable for 90% of traditional inset fires.
My advise would be to measure the depth of your finished fireplace/precast flue opening and show or quote this to any sales person who should be able to sell you a fire suitable for that flue system.
I know this is a diy forum but use a local Corgi engineer who should be willing to survey your flue system and then advise you on a suitable fire for that flue.

Thanks for the detailed reply, the depth of my "flue"is 280mm and precast, the fire I was considering says suitable for class1 & class 2 prefabricated, but the "qualified"corgi" fitters told me my flue would be OK for my choice of fire, this is what has confused me.
