Hi all,

We've got a problem with an old gas fire. It's probably a 1970's model.

We will be replacing in time, but at the moment we're gonna have to
make do with this one (cash is a bit tight)

The fire isn't burning very well. The flames are tall and yellow. On our
other fire, the flames are shorter and more of a blue colour, so we
suspect that all is not well. We fear that the suspect fire is giving off
fumes.

The fire is siuated in front of an old chimney stack, so we presume
that the fire needs a service, or the chimney/flue needs a clean.

Now, before we call out anyone, is there anything we can do
ourselves ? Could we clean the fire ? Is there a way of knowing
whether the chimney/flue is blocked or not ?

If the chimney is to blame, do we need a gas engineer + a chimney
sweep ?

Also, any idea on costs ? - I'm always wary of being ripped off.

Thanks for listening to me.

btw is there evidence of soot/smoke in the room, soot up the front of the fireplace. ?
