I'm doing some self learning for ACS. I've been reading about gas hacks and thought I'd share for the other engineers.

So when you're at a customer property, do the following checks:
  • Check the meter and ensure the security shear nuts are fitted (these are always fitted to meters < 2 years old)
  • Visually inspect the meter and look for signs of tampering
  • Check that when a gas appliance is on the the meter dial moves smoothly, any stuttering or jamming and something's fishy.
  • If you suspect they've changed the meter, discretely make a note of the serial number and call National Grid afterwards to investigate
Gas meter fraud is on the rise, especially with gas meters being as cheap as chips on ebay

Also, dont let on that you know there's something dodgy going on otherwise you might end up like this guy

Since when did ACS include hacking gas meters? Is this some kind of joke, or is it an obsession with a post a day?

lol you're right I really don't know the syllabus yet. It's early days... so I'm just reading whatever I can get my hands on!

But, to get back on topic... trust me gas fraud is on the increase. Especially in takeaways and restaurants. And the way I see it Gas Engineers should be policing this. In fact I'd go so far as to say they should add it into the regulations; i.e. make it mandatory for gas engineers to check the meter for every call out. At the end of the day we are all paying higher gas prices because of the cheaters

So, you are not an RGI yet then?

When and if you do qualify to become a RGI, you may not want to post threads like this to give the opportunist gas thief relevant details how to steal gas.
Please refrain from posting gas related subjects until you are qualified. Then join the CC . I'll be long retired before that happens.

secondary meters?
I wont go into detail about what they do (for reasons that must be obvious)... but pretty much they are getting free gas. I will explain more once I can join the Combustion Chamber

PS GasMan28... I am not myself a gas engineer. Just thinking about taking the ACS exams atm

You would be surprised just how uninterested the gas suppliers are.

A customer had lived in the house for four years and wanted to sell it.

She had never received or paid any bill.

To help the sale she contacted ALL the gas suppliers and NONE admitted having supplied or even wanted to.

A a minicab firm in NW London has a meter which seems stuck on 9999 whenever I have visited to mend the Biasi boiler!

Tony, you're too old school. Nowadays grassing is something to be proud of.

Do you believe that passing the ACS exams will make you an engineer? Surly before you can call yourself an engineer you would need a degree in engineering..
