Gas Safe course

Hi there

I have been trying to find a genuine course that will enable me to train as a gas engineer, legally repairing boilers etc. There are lots of courses out there that range from £2,000 - £10,000 but I'm not which if any are genuine. Could anyone recommend an institution?

Might be worth asking in the Plumbing/Central heating forum instead of Electrics UK??

The expensive ones are private colleges with shortened courses, usually full time.

If you want a cheaper and longer course then you should contact your local technical college. Many like the Willesden Tech are now universities!

Check with Gas Safe as they requirements are more stringent.

If you have virtually no qualifications and join an employer then the Government will pay for your gas NVQ course in the Train to Gain.

just a word of warning; the industry is awash with 6 week plumbers and are driving labour prices down. Who would you employ if you had to choose between a 20 yr experienced tradesman or a 6 week college leaver with a certificate?

Look at another trade woud be my advice!

Radio 4 said yesterday that the unemployment rate of plumbers had increased by 20%.

Not as bad a vets though as their unemployment rate has increased by 400%.

There had been only one unemployed vet and now there are four !

As Dangermouse says there are plenty of people out with bits of paper but bugger all knowledge or experience.

And there are plenty of hugely skilled and knowledgeble people in the industry earning less money than a shelf stacker or nothing whatsoever.

Knowing what the costs are, how much time things take and the hassle you get, I would not start today if I had to pay it all out of my own pocket.
It is very hard to cover your costs when there are thousands of illegals working without that bother.
