Hi

A guy who was going to replace our bath with a shower screen doesn’t have a current Gas Safe registration. (Expired 2023) He admitted he hadn’t renewed and added “not needed for bathroom work”. We had other concerns so have said we’d look elsewhere.

Just grateful for your views on the Gas Safe issue. Ie plumbing job but not involving gas etc.

Regards

No gas safe registration is required when not working on gas pipes or gas appliances.
General plumbing does not require a gas engineer.

Why on earth would you think someone has to be gas registered to fit a Bathroom ?

I would also point out that being gas safe registered is not the quality mark that its supposed to be..https://registeredgasengineer.co.uk/a-reminder-on-sanctions-and-suspension/ and they also admit that#s just the ones that have been caught...like the farcical electricians schemes where its almost impossible to sort out the good from the cowboys who hide behind registrations, eg work done on our flat, by Darren, signed off by Eric from his sofa - 360 miles away.... you are far better to ask for references of recent work done and check them.

What is it that some people can’t resist the opportunity for a sideswipe I explained that there were “other concerns” which caused us to ditch him.

nope not a side swipe just a really basic question and still doesnt explain why you would think they need to be gas safe to fit a bath

Guilty as charged. If this had been an election, you’d have lost your deposit. Had it gone to court, you’d have been found guilty 12-0. (V guilty indeed)

I don't have a dog in this fight.

Like @gas112 , I too do not understand why you thought that the plumber might need to be Gas Safe. I know several plumbers that are not Gas Safe, in general, they often charge less than a Gas Safe plumber.

Think the establishment is closing ranks now

Blimey mate. I am a decorator, not a plumber. There is nothing "establishment" about me.

I have relied upon advice from @gas112 in the past. It may well be the case that you too have offered me sound advice. Again, I do not have a dog in this "fight". You mentioned that you had other reservations about the plumber, with that in mind, I fully understand why you are looking elsewhere. Notwithstanding, I hope that you now appreciate that you can employ a plumber who is not not Gas Safe, and I genuinely hope that you have the same quality of finish... but at a lower cost.

I think, you are being rather silly. Neither you nor anyone else, needs to be GS, to do work on a bathroom, or the plumbing in the home, or the bathroom.

You asked, and your question was correctly answered.
