Undo the gland nut, loosely wind about 5-6 turns of twisted PTFE tape and replace the gland nut.
VERY gently increase the tightness of the nut until it can just be felt to be making the spindle a little harder to turn and then that's probably about right.
The same repair can be done to a stopcock. But many of those are very old and worn and corroded and better replaced.
I have to been called out to many emergency's where there was a leaking gate valve or stopcock and I have done what Tony has said above. Normally the customer get the hump due to the job taking all of 5 minutes.

As Tony said undo the gate valve and apply ptfe around the tread, It does take guts to do because if it is undone too much then it's splashy splashy time.
