GE HOTPOINT Washing machine goes straight to spin cycle

If somone can help... my washing machine when turned on just goes straight to the spin cycle and spins..... it gets no water and when turned on skips straight to spin...... please help I am a mom that cannot afford costly repairs and would like to try to fix it myself if possible...
