Hi

I was after some info about how I can get back to being an electrician after some years out of the game - heres some background:
Served an apprenticeship (in Scotland) and gained the 40 odd SVQ modules needed but never fully completed my time (due to an accident meaning I couldn't work). I server over 4 years with a company and was just waiting for the apprenticeship to come through.
Have been doing IT for the last 6 years but now would like to make a move back to my roots and be a spark again.
I have applied to sit the C&G 2381 training and exam which will give me/refresh me on the 16th edition regs but wonder where I stand with the whole apprenticeship thing.
basically i have all the qualifications and time served needed to have my time out but don't have the bit of paper to say I did.

Any ideas what I could do or if it's possible to finish the apprenticeship??

Any help much appreciated :)

I went through this dilemma 3 years ago. It depends on what do want to do work for someone or work for yourself. I wanted to work for myself, so I took the new regs course 16th edition, BS7671, passed it, but at the same time part P building regulations were being introduced. which meant that I would have to undertake an installation and testing course, and register with one of the scheme providers e.g ECA or NICEC, etc. Any of the courses can be found at your local colleges. And you can register for ECA and NICEC on the web.

Upshot is I didn't have the time to do the installation and testing course or have the money to see me through whilst I took a reduced rate income (which wasn't as good as people made out e.g >£200 a day). Also the NICEC would have had to have seen a recent installation of which I didn't have any.

So I remained a IT contractor, but I can feed my kids now. But all of his is sad as Sparkies tend to be the funniest people I have worked with, and I can't remember a better time than when I worked on my electrician apprenticeship.
