After having an old gas fire removed and smashing out the 1970s brick surround, we are now back to the location of the original Victorian fireplace, which is to say, a hole in the wall, that I recently had swept.

As luck (or foolhardiness) would have it, I've just purchased a largeish wooden fireplace surround from a local auction.

Now I need to get the fireplace insert/grate that's appropriate.

Are there any tips from you more experienced hands? Does for instance it need to fit exactly into the space that's been left? Or can this be overcome when fitting? Obviously, it needs to be wide enough to fit behind the wooden surround. Off in next few days to do a walkaround of a few local salvage yards.

Any pointers, would be appreciated!

Any of your neighbours still have original fireplace, good place to start as regards getting another to fit.

Might cost you a bit more but a specialist will be able to do it easily. We've had a reclaimed fire fitted and an existing one removed, renovated and put back by Wards (http://www.wardantiquefireplaces.co.uk/). They had parts in stock to replace the missing parts on the existing one...
