As an aside, an older Audi came past me on the A30 other day. It was laying down a fair old smokescreen that smelled of chip oil. I'd say someone had been fitting the wrong fuel!

I stand by what I see, our little diesel does a real - by measurement, dependant upon odometer and forecourt fuel pump readings, 55 MP(Imp)G
Thus burning some 83 cc of diesel per mile on average... A cube of 4.36 cm length of side vol. of fuel per mile !! Not a lot really.

I don't think so - I think cats and particulate filters themselves are quite robust. The problem is ensuring you know exactly what is in the chip oil. However, it has much worse long term
effects on injection pumps in more modern diesels.
