I need to cut a piece of glass that is insitu on a glazed door in order to install a cat flap. The pane is approx 11 x 6 inches and the flap is 8 x 6. Rather than knocking out the entire pane, I thought that I could cut the glass across. The fixings on three sides of the flap could still be attached to the lower solid part of the door and the glazing bars. Is this feasible?? I believe there are glass cutter wheels available, but can these be used on glazing insitu?
Please advise me ... I cannot get a professional in to do the job as I go away in a few days and need the flap urgently!

catflaps are a bad idea..
cats in general are a bad idea.. stupid species...

just leave it to fend for itself..

put a water bowl out where it will fill with rain and throw several handfulls of food over the lawn.. it'll survive... ;)

alternatively put it in a cattery you cheapo... :)

and no you can't cut glass in situ since part of the glass will be in the frame and will probably crack when you try to knock out the piece you don't want..

I thought that, then i tought about fitting those old plastic circular vents that rotate in the wind that there seemed to be a spate of everyone having, they were cut in situ

As it sounds like a small piece of glass in a door, why not replace it with a wood or PVCu panel and cut that?

If the glass is old, it will be brittle & probably brake. Best bet get rid of the cat.

those holes are a complete line for it to break to..

your line will be incomplete and will break along the line to the end of it then go where it want to..

And if the door is new, it'll be toughened glass which you can't cut.

may be a kind neighbour and a grit tray.

how long are you away for.

someone will be in to feed it or you have an auto feeder.

I would leave 3 trays 1 in the bathroom 1 by the door it uses to go out and one in an area it may have used before.

personally i went on holiday for a week used an auto feeder, had someone visit 3 days.

I was paranoid the auto feeder would break or the empty house would invite stray cats who would attack mine in there.

theres not much piece of mind with pets and being away.

Assuming that the glass is not toughened/laminated, you would normally need to cut a circular hole in the glass for the catflap, specifically made to fit into glass panels. It is not possible to cut a square hole in-situ. Cutting a circular hole is not an easy option if you have not done this before. The best option is to remove the glass and put in a timber infill & cut the hole in that. I have been cutting glass for 37 years (I really should get out more..)
