want to know opinions on how to acheive a glass like finish on a wooden 4 panel door.already prepped and undercoat sanded perfectly flat with wet and dry paper(looks great already!) but im wondering 2 or 3 very thin coats of gloss lightly de nibbing between coats? or 1 or 2 full bodied coats and concentrate on brush technique? not wanting to spray

I used laylands white gloss. It's think as hell but when it dries it complete flat and glass like

getting the surface perfect is most of the job. Try giving several coats of undercoat. Do one the colour you want, then give it another coat slightly different. Sand this "different" coat flat until you can just see the other one grinning through it, all over, with no patchiness.

Lie the door flat, then you can use a good flowing coat without having to worry about runs and tears. I prefer a runny topcoat to a thick one.

BTW if you hang it on lift-off hinges, it is far easier to take it off and rehang it after painting. If you are going for a Number 10 finish, polish up your brass hinges, including the screwheads, and the lock plate. Take door furniture off to paint the door.
