Evening all,

Me and the missus have spent the biggest part of this afternoon varnishing our skirting...only for her to change her mind and decide she wants them glossing white!!

Question is...can I gloss straight over it or do I need to do anything else?

They were brand new skirts and have only been sanded and had a single coat of Ronseal DiamondHard Varnish so far.

Thanks in advance

While my own personal opinion is that varnish/stain is far better than paint on wood, you can of course, go white.

When the varnish dries, gently sand it down a little again, undercoat it white, when that dries, very gentle sanding again, if it is covered with 1 coat of undercoat, the gloss it now. If not, undercoat again first.

You could try ''once'' whic claims to be able to cover in one coat, removing the need for undercoating, but undercoating is a more precise way.

I would always ensure you have sanded a surface down and smoothed it out properly before you paint. You may get away with it initially but in the long term you will see a difference.

One of the most important things to remember when painting over the varnish is that it is acting as a natural knotting agent, if by sanding you in anyway break through the varnish there is the possibility of resinous bleed. So a stain block such as Bin should be considered prior to painting.
