How much should 1 pay for a service on a glow warm 18 HXi ( which hasn't received a service since it was installed)

What does a service include?

Regards

Round about £60-£70,
Visual insperction of outer casing/electrical and water carrying pipes and condition.
Clean combustion chamber and burner.
Check internal seals and gaskets for leaks.
Check flu is clear and clean.
Check operation of gas valve.
Analyse emission gases and adjust if necessary.
Remove and clean magnaclean filtre if fitted.
Check opperation and controls and boiler are correct.

Any repairs needed would be pointed out.

This may vary slightly depending on engineer.

Nobody is going to tell you to fit a PCB on this. You're now in 2 posts, why add another? If this particular boiler hasn't been serviced for 7 years I'd be worried.

Stop messing around and get somebody in, to diagnose fault firstly then service. You will be looking at £150 if the PCB is the ONLY fault, which I doubt.

Gas2air is right. Looks like your looking for info to blow yourself up.

Ahhh one of those services "well it was working before you touched it "

I love it when people phone and say they would like a service, "oh by the way the boiler isn't working. Well i'll tell you what i'll diagnose and repair it for a fee and then when i have got it working i will service it for £65.
You dont phone a garage up when your car breaks down and say oh i think my car needs a service. Repairs and service are 2 completely different things.
Another 1 i love is when people think a service will guarantee their boiler wont breakdown

Take it easy gents, I had some one come round after the first post, he took 1 look and advised me to purchas a PCB, and quoted me just under£300.

As it had never been serviced ( according to the records) I thought it would ideal time to get the thing serviced. Assuming the PCB resolved the original problem.

The same guy quoted me 70 for a service.

So i am seeking advise, before I get ripped off.

Sorry for posting twice, I had got some one, he took 1 look and said PCB? Without touching the darn thing, he said he has dealt with the same problem 3 times over the last 2 weeks

Not made of money, I have asked another so called specialist to come over and tell me the same thing without touching the boiler?

Why would a PCB fail Rgill? This boiler is very notorious yet you still believe in the specialists? Fit the ebay PCB all you like, not my problem.

Accepted, it's not your problem, I am on this site to seek advise, I have not committed to anything, I haven't got a clue about boilers or if this boiler is notorious (for what???)

No idea why the PCB would fail, it's just what the plumber told me, thanks for nothing.

What are the symptoms??

Thanks, we'll it started when my partner noticed the heating was off, checked thermostat, which had no light showing, checked the Boiler no power at all, checked the boiler upstairs, it was switched off. Turned it on, checked thermostat, that seemed ok as light was showing but the boiler still had no power, switched it off from mains and back on again still nothing.

Symptoms - no light on the boiler, opened it up and confirmed the PCB board is receiving electricity, the fuse seems ok too. Form here I don't now what to check or do? Called in a plumber and he took 1 look at the boiler and said it is the PCB, and would cost me 300 to replace.

Please help.

I can see antagonism on both sides of the debate here, but as a DIYer, I would point out that it's not a good idea to try repairing your boiler if you don't know the basics of how it works.

I do not know this boiler, or why it is notorious either, but a quick internet search reveals it is a premix boiler. Boilers of this type have to be set up properly with the right equipment in order to be safe - they can be finicky things.

If you are intent on changing the PCB yourself, please educate yourself with what you need to know before you start the job. 'Pressing and guessing' won't be a good idea, could result in an unsafe situation, and could end up costing you more than professional help.

I would recommend that you get someone in if at all possible.

Mogget.

Thanks, I will not being changing it myself, I will be getting in a plumber, in ever intended to Do it myself, but I don't feel comfortable when the guy comes in and tells me it's the PCB, just by looking at it, I have found the price for the PCB - £180 new or £70 for reconditioned, both have 12 month guarantee.

Should I avoid using the reconditioned PCB

I'll leave advice about whether to buy a reconditioned PCB to the experts, as my competence runs out in that area.

However, what I would say is if you buy a reconditioned PCB, most of it will be old, with a few new parts. If you buy a new PCB, all of it will be new. In my experience of electronics, if one part fails, another is often waiting in the wings...
