Hi all,

When I moved into my current home, the previous owner had installed a brand new Glow Worm boiler 6 months earlier. However, as part of our renovations, we decided to change the radiators to brand new ones. When we drained the system, the water came out jet black. Any remaining water in the radiators was also a jet black ink like liquid. I believe the system was not powerflushed when the new boiler was installed. It did have a Magnaclean installed. Anyway, after clearing out the system and installing our new radiators, we noticed that all of our radiators only ever got hot at the top - in fact, although the boiler does bring the temperature up to whatever we have on the thermostat, its a slow process - the house is well insulated. Last year I decided to get it powerflushed, the person who done it said our system was actually very clean as hardly anything came out however when he took our heat exchanger plate out to fix a hot water issue, he showed me that it was clogged with thick black deposits that he eventually cleared using some acid. A few months later, our hot water stopped working again, this time I called a Vaillant engineer (got a deal) who took off the heat exchanger plate and showed me the same black deposits so he replaced the plate with a new one. He said that the main heat exchanger didn't sound right and it was likely that was also congested with deposits and advised that to change it would cost two thirds of what a new boiler would cost but in the meantime he said I should just carry on with the boiler. Any thoughts on what I should do - is my boiler not powerful enough for my home which is why the radiators are only half full - should I replace my boiler?

Many thanks in advance.

There could be some truth in the main heat exchanger is blocked, and they are usually the most expensive part of a boiler. Your radiators will be completely full, just not working to expectations, which in my opinion could be a balancing issue, partially blocked pipework or even heat exchanger related. I wouldn’t know about whether you should get a new boiler, and I don't know whether a blocked main heat exchanger can be cleared - another engineer maybe able to answer better.

Sorry, I meant to say half hot instead of half full. I balanced the radiators to ensure an even distribution of heat around the house. I've noticed it takes the boiler around 60 mins to get to the target flow temperature.
