Just been reading about the renewed franchise to GNER Rail.

It it difficult to believe that the government is genuinely interested in traffic congestion or pollution when you read this sort of thing. £2M a week to the gov before any other operating costs! I know GNER bid for it but they must of been given guide prices, a fivefold increase is pathetic.
Surely this is the ultimate backdoor tax, which must effect fares for train users and any freight on that route. I never use it but I reckon a plane or car will be cheaper now.
