My roaming last month was £1/min with O2 and £1.40/min with Virgin. It was 49p/text with O2, not sure what it was with Virgin. So I just used my O2 phone to make calls because for £1/min or 98p for two texts I figured I could say more in the minute than I could with two texts for the same price.

Used columbusdirect.com in the past, easy to set up and cheap.

If your going away next year and can sqeeze them both in within 12 months, you can take out a yearly travel insurance.

Not tried it myself, but someone advised me to get a local sim card where you go as it may be cheaper, or to use your number and top your credit up there but on the local network for the area.

I've just spoken to a Virgin CSA.

To make a call from Crete would cost 38p/min. Incoming calls would .cost me 19p/min, texts, 35p/ea.

Voda charge 38/19/29p respectively for calls/texts to/from that country.

O2 charge 35/18/25p.

These are all PAYG rates.

We always get a yearly family worldwide policy costs around 100 i think and covers any amount of holidays a year up to a month in length also covers breaks in this country once you are something like 50 miles from home and covers the kids for schools trips etc.
