Two of my Gold Fish in my pond have large bloated stomachs.

I thought they were carrying eggs, but they've had this all winter and getting larger. Otherwise they are OK, lively like the others.

What could be the cause, I don't want to kill them if it could be cured.

Has anyone seen this or know what it is.

it may be their swim bladder, either way there is nothing you can really do (cost a lot to take it to the vet for a £1 goldfish)

Thanks for your replies and links.

I will monitor the two fish and if it should worsen. I will put them out of their misery, as much as I don't want to.

thanks

I wouldn't wory too much if they are pond fish. I have kept pond fish for years. Some fish do sometimes look bloated, when looking at them from above, and they seem to get on fine.

I would be conserned, if they also started to swim on their side( swim bladded diesease), the scales started to stick out on edge ( dropsey/viral disease). If they looked like they were covered in cotton wool ( fungus).

Very red or protruding gills ( on its last legs!).

I'm never sure if the 'bloating' look is due to looking at the fish from above, female carrying eggs, just being a fat fish, or a type of growth. But I don't wory unless I see any of the signs of distress/ disease I've listed above.

Now I know this may sound strange, but here's what to do to save on vets bills. Goldfish can have their swim bladders sorted. Sometimes its only a temporary fix but used it a few times myself on family goldfish. Get the goldfish out of the pond and put them in a smaller tank/bowl etc. Doesn't matter if you use the pond water or not. Anyway, then add a frozen pea to the water and hopefully they'll eat it. It has to be a frozen pea. (garden) This seems to sort the pproblem. Don't ask me why as I have no idea. I only know stuff about iguanas, not animals but picked this tip up from someone a while back. On the plus side, it costs nothing, and even if it doesnt work, at least you can say you tried but I think you'll find it does. Good luck.

they may well be female full of eggs, i have 1 female 2male ,female has had a fat belly for ages, but, she has spawned more than 5 times already this year, they will only spawn when totally full of eggs, then they will give of sign to the males ,keep an eye on the pond ,and on a good day you will see them ,going nuts ,so to speak.
