Hi,

I was just sanding the paintwork in the bathroom in my 1920s house and I found some weird looking green paint.

Is this anything to be concerned about or should I go back about sanding?

Many thanks for any advice.

Not sure that I understand your question.

I am a decorator. I often come across green or brown paint that is a pain to sand. When using electric sanders, it overheats and gums up the paper.

It may well have lead in the paint. If you are concerned about making the lead airborne, fill over it and sand the filler.

I suspect it is linseed oil gloss paint, and probably contains lead.

It strips quite easily with a hot air gun, but I don't know the correct precautions.

You can scrape a bit off and have it tested for lead content.

The health and safety executive recommend setting the gun at a max of 550 degrees (c). I doubt that most DIYers have heat guns with digital readouts though.

Mine currently retails at £150-160.
