Hi
Can anybody can advise , my mam has a green star bosch boiler that has been playing up and im convinced its the wirelss mechanical thermostat , ive been pricing them up and they seem very expensive , im contemplating just replacing the old stat and receiver left pic with mechanical timer that fits onto the boiler like the middle pic and just adjusting the heating temp with the dial on the boiler , is this doable and is there any wiring involved because if remember rightly when i fitted the stat around 15 years ago i had to fit or remove a link on the pcb or can anybody recommend a replacement wireless stat i can just replace the old stat and receiver with .
thanks in advance
Cheers

Removing the cover on that boiler forms part of the room seal/combustion circuit, so best a gas safe registered engineer do it. What's wrong with the stat/heating?

In theory, there is no need to have a thermostat on the wall. The thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) can do the lot, but what you are looking at is what you want to pay. It is a balance between fuel saving and installation cost, at £40 each for the TRV heads, and £73 for the hub, with Drayton Wiser, and in my case 14 heated areas, the cost can be eye watering.

Bosch from memory are not OpenTherm, but they do have their own system, depends on age of boiler, my mother's had no option for any ebus, latter models do, and there are some converters, but what fits what is well over my head.

Some boilers are silly, and one does need to break a seal to reach the wiring centre, the Bosch my mother had no seals broken, and it would cause problems with rented property as an electrician/inspector doing an EICR does need to check wiring on fixed appliances, so it would cause problems if removing the panel to get access to electrics broke any seal, but some manufacturers are silly.

So the main steam is Drayton Wiser, Honeywell Evohome, Hive, and Tado, but there are also some Chinese units, as to what does what, again we read how Wiser has very clever algorithms, but who will admit they have bought a pup, and plumbers may fit them, but only the user can say how good.

Hi yes basically me and the owld fella installed the boiler around 15 years ago or so , maybe more., along with all the pipework etc , all the rads have thermostatic valves fitted , i also wired the wireless stat into position , and if I remember correctly im sure i had to remove or add a link to activate the wireless stat , me dads now passed on and i cannot seem to find any of the info for the boiler like diagrams etc .
The heating is now hit and miss the green light on the receiver which sits on the boiler doenst always light up and the heating doesn't come on , sometimes though when the timer is moved the light comes on and boiler kicks in also the clock doesn't work on it , me mams now nearly 80 and i would prefare to just fit a basic mechanical timer on the boiler itself and set up heating times etc and set the temp on the boiler rather than shelling out 200 quid for a stat which she only ever has set at one temperature all the time , im just not sure if il need to add or remove a link to convert it back from wireless to built in clock type . Its a Worcester green-star 33 kw unit like the attached pic live just got online . I was thinking something like the timer on the pic attached .
Thanks again

I was also contemplating removing the timer altogether and just setting the temps on the boiler and get me mam to just turn on the boiler when she needs it .

That’s not the best idea. Probably best with either the mechanical MT10, or programmable thermostat and blanking plate.
