a friend texted me a picture after a discussion about moving a planter in a school playground.
after looking at the image she sent me, I don't think that it is anywhere near as heavy as she thinks?

I believe that it a sturdy build, but bottomless? ie is a frame with a fabric lining and soil added?

how heavy can it be? Before seeing the image I mentioned using straps/asking a close by school if their tractor could be used/ using a pump truck. I think four blokes could carry this frame if empty? image001.jpg

two strong blokes - or one if you can get some trolley wheels near the other end.

Lift one end. place roller under the planter,

Lift other end and roll forward on roller.until roller is close to the mid point of planter,

Put another roller and roll forward

Repeat until destination reached

On flat surfaces broom handles may be large enough diamete for roller.

my thoughts
it can be well built but still be weak ??
as in if its full with a heavy load then straps or ropes around the back and sides would be essential so the box is compressed and pulled so not relying on the fixings to hold any weight just hold the box together
having said that, if the pull is uneven the box can start to go diamond shape that will probably if it goes too far cause the fixings to pull out or break??

From the photos, having built similar size planters, one man could move that with a struggle and something with wheels (barrow/sack truck/etc) or 2 men could just pick it up and carry it. I can't see what is holding each level together, maybe it would come apart into 3 tiers

Best way to find out is to wedge one end up, see if one person can lift the structure to a comfortable height, (waist), for carrying. If they can then two people should be able to manage it. If not then it may be possible to put two support beams under it, 1 near each end, and 4 people carry it. It also depends on how far it is going and what the terrain is like. A smooth path? No problem. Carrying over uneven ground? More risk of slipping/stumbling. Slope up/down? Danger of sliding.

Cheers
It is a school that a friend’s kid attends. They raised a load of money to turn a tarmac playground into a more garden like area. I believe the planters were built as a donation by someone who worked on the chelsea flower show and that they are well built.
Afaik the soil will be removed and there isn’t a solid base.
I can lend them a couple of lengths of timber to cross brace if needed.

she was certain that they were exceptionally heavy but when I saw the photos I didn’t think so.
Unless the timber is incredibly heavy it can’t be too bad
